Top talking points for the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix 2021 qualifying
Verstappen of Red Bull fought off Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas to win his fourth pole position in Bahrain, demonstrating his remarkable performance during pre-season testing and practise.
As the defending F1 world champions appeared to trail Verstappen and Red Bull, Hamilton edged away Mercedes teammate Bottas for the second position, believing he got the most out of his W12 F1 car. In Q3, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc jumped to fourth place with a strong late lap, while AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly finished fifth.
Daniel Ricciardo, a new McLaren recruit, took sixth place in qualifying, directly ahead of teammate Lando Norris, with Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr taking eighth place in his racing debut for the Scuderia. Fernando Alonso qualified ninth for Alpine following a two-year sabbatical, while Lance Stroll rounded out the top ten for Aston Martin.
Sergio Perez had a tough debut F1 qualifying session for Red Bull, failing to make it past Q2 on the medium tyres and qualifying 11th at the Bahrain Grand Prix 2021. Sebastian Vettel, the four-time Formula One world champion, had a worse fate, as the new Aston Martin driver was pushed out of qualifying in Q1 due to traffic and yellow flags. The German will begin the race in 18th position.
